Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Your House or Apartment

General Preparations (Do These Before Hurricane Season or Early in the Season)

✅ Review your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy – ensure it covers hurricane and flood damage

✅ Identify your evacuation zone and nearest shelters

✅ Create a family emergency plan – include pet care and communication steps

✅ Prepare an emergency supply kit (see below)

✅ Trim trees and branches away from windows and power lines

✅ Store or secure outdoor furniture, lights, decorations, grills, and trash bins

✅ Have a tool kit ready (hammer, duct tape, utility knife, etc.)

✅ Ensure all important documents are stored in a waterproof container or digitally

✅ Back up computers and phones – store copies in the cloud or an external drive

Before the Storm (When a Hurricane is Approaching)

✅ Fill your vehicle’s gas tank

✅ Take photos/video of your home’s interior & exterior for insurance purposes

✅ Charge all phones, power banks, and portable devices

✅ Fill bathtubs and buckets with water for flushing toilets

✅ Set refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings; pack with ice if possible

✅ Bring pets indoors and prepare their food, water, carriers, and medication

✅ Withdraw some cash (ATMs may not work after the storm)

✅ Check flashlights and batteries are working

✅ Close and lock all windows and doors

✅ Unplug electronics and elevate where possible to avoid water damage

✅ Cover windows with shutters, plywood, or impact-resistant film (if in a house)

✅ Place towels and sandbags by doors and low windows prone to flooding

 

Emergency Kit (Have Ready in One Place)

Flashlights & extra batteries

Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (for news updates)

Water – at least 1 gallon per person per day for 3-7 days

Non-perishable food for at least 3-7 days

Toiletries, hygiene items, and moist towelettes

Prescription medications and basic first-aid kit

Copies of important documents (IDs, insurance, etc.)

Pet supplies (food, leash, meds, litter)

Spare clothes and sturdy shoes

Phone chargers, power banks

Comfort items for children (games, toys, books)

 

If You’re in an Apartment or Condo:

✅ Follow building management updates and guidelines

✅ Ensure your balcony is cleared of all items

✅ Know the location of emergency exits, stairwells, and backup generators

✅ Move valuables away from windows and off the floor

✅ If on a lower floor, be extra cautious about flooding

✅ Place towels at door thresholds and seal sliding doors/windows with tape or plastic wrap
